10 Preparations You Should Make Before You Embark On A Transition Journey

Does your organisation give you a clear heads up before you jump onto the next big transition or do you constantly fly by the seat of your pants as the goalposts are changing?

Let's talk about planning

Eisenhower rightly said Planning is everything. The Plan is nothing.

The planning process is what counts.

Here you are thinking through all the possibilities of what you may face and develop a strategy for dealing with them.

The Plan? Let's face it things rarely go exactly to plan.

Here are 10 things you (and your team) should do now to be ready for your next planned or unexpected change:

1. Develop transferable skills

Develop transferable skills and abilities to deal with the unexpected.

2. Actively build

Actively build purposeful and strong relationships and change advocacy. This creates a culture with a positive mindset, a strong sense of well-being and belonging. Did you know? CEO's rate the benefits of investing in development programs twice as high on culture and employee engagement than on closing a specific skill gap.

3. Manage expectations

Manage expectations and uplift empathy by having an understanding of the emotions and anxiety that comes with change.

4. Build a growth mindset

Build a growth mindset and willingness to learn across your team. Did you know? People are ready to retrain entirely to improve their future employability. But only 1:3 employees are given that opportunity by their employer.

Why We Love Change Resilience (And You Should, Too!)

5. Open up communications

Open up communications and empower self-confidence and independence. Did you know? Upskilling doubled the confidence of CEOs in their revenue growth and organisations future.

6. Take charge

Take charge by reflecting on all possibilities, positives and negatives, for a change. Did you know? Neuroscience research shows that during organisational change employees value choices. Powerlessness impacts our well-being, motivation, and even damages cognition.

7. Be clear on the compelling reason

Be clear on the compelling reason and WHY for the change from more than one angle. Did you know? 9 out of 10 employees are willing to trade a percentage of their lifetime earnings for greater meaning at work.

8. Set an s.m.a.r.t. goal

Set an s.m.a.r.t. goal for the outcomes of the change and the future state. Otherwise, we would call it a dream.

9. Align and integrate

Tie any change efforts back to the organisation’s overall strategy, vision and values. The more you align and integrate change with BAU, the more likely are new habits forming sustainably past the project go-live.

10. Embrace resistance

Recognise the risk and anticipate resistance. Did you know? Embracing resistance as engagement can make your change success 24% more likely.

Successful change leaders invest in future-ready skills before they have to.
