Purpose
The purpose of this article is to ensure seamless video production by focusing on proper technical preparation and testing before recording. This process minimises issues that are difficult to rectify during editing and ensures a high-quality final product.
Procedure
1. Choose Scene / Background
- Select a suitable background for the video.
- Adjust lighting to eliminate sharp reflections.
- For whiteboard shots, position the camera close to the side and slightly angled to avoid glare. You will need to go close and come from the side, then move the camera at an angle ever so slightly towards the door.
2. Prepare Equipment
- SD Card
- Ensure the SD card is empty and inserted into the camera. Test record to confirm functionality. Format the card if necessary.
- Tripod Selection:
- Use the taller metal tripod for standing shots.
- Use the shorter black plastic tripod for seated shots.
- Microphone (shotgun):
- Connect the shotgun mic to the camera as a backup sound source.
- Set manual audio recording on the camera to avoid buzzing.
- Power Supply
- Plug the camera into an outlet for unlimited energy supply.
- Camera Settings:
- Verify the video recording settings.
- Focus on the speaker or subject.
- Ensure manual audio recording is enabled for the shotgun mic.
3. Optional: Second Camera Setup
- Use a phone’s front camera for an additional angle and more engaging content.
- Align the second camera with the primary one for consistent white balance.
- Note: This can increase the transfer and editing time.
4. Lapel Mic and Audio Test
- Connect the lapel mic to the laptop’s audio jack with the setting switched to “off/smartphone.”
- Use Audacity to test the audio recording. Look for clear sound without distortion. You are looking for a result like the one on the right.
- Position the lapel mic securely on the speaker to avoid rubbing against clothing. Use a tape if necessary.
5. Test the Recording Setup
- Record a test video to ensure both cameras are focused on the subject.
- Confirm that the subject looks directly at the lens (not the playback screen).
6. Start Recording
- Start audio recording first and say, “Audio on.”
- Begin recording on each camera and state, “Camera one on” and “Camera two on.”
- Clearly state the topic and shoot number. Clap loudly to synchronise the audio and video during editing.
